Is There a Difference Between a Cranial Prosthesis and a Wig?
YES

While a cranial prosthesis is a type of wig, it is specifically classified as a cranial prosthesis when hair loss is caused by a diagnosed medical condition, treatment, or clinical disease. This medical-grade prosthetic is designed to address hair loss that may be long-term or permanent, offering either full or partial coverage depending on the individual’s needs. A cranial prosthesis is more than just a wig—it is a high-quality, comfortable hair replacement solution, often covered by insurance.
A cranial prosthesis stands apart from an off-the-shelf wig in both quality and functionality. Unlike mass-produced wigs with a "one-size-fits-all" concept, a cranial prosthesis is custom-sized for the individual. The process involves taking precise head measurements to create a personal fit, tailored to the client’s unique needs. While not perfect, the custom sizing ensures significantly more comfort and functionality compared to off-the-shelf wigs, which cannot match the advanced features or individualized care that a cranial prosthesis provides.
Wig Types
Cranial Prosthesis:
A custom-sized wig for a patient who has lost their hair due to a medical condition.
Monofilament:
A monofilament-made wig hand ties each hair to a soft lace material. A monofilament crown, part, or top mimics the appearance of hair growth from the scalp and helps the prosthesis look much more natural, having the benefit of natural movement and added comfort.
Full Lace:
A full lace prosthesis covers the entire head and is installed slightly differently than a lace front prosthesis that is only attached at the front edges of your head.
Frontal Lace:
A frontal lace prosthesis has a small sheer lace panel along the front hairline attached to the front of the prosthesis. The hair is sewn into the lace. Lace-front prosthetics are elastic in the back and cover the entire scalp area with a natural hairstyle.
Toppers & Toupees:
Toppers and toupees are designed to add volume to thin or fine hair areas and are for smaller specific areas of the head.
